brief History

1992

The United Progressive Party was born.
Antigua Caribbean Liberation Movement (ACLM), Progressive Labour Movement (PLM) and the United National Democratic Party (UNDP) made an historic decision to fight under a united flag and to unite behind a single standard.

1993

April 18
The first UPP Biennial Convention was held.

Baldwin Spencer was elected Political Leader while Tim Hector was appointed  Deputy Political Leader following the amalgamation of the Progressive Labour Movement (PLM), the United National Democratic Party (UNDP), and the Antigua Caribbean Liberation Movement (ACLM).

Vincent “Tubby” Derrick was elected Chairman.

1994

General Elections
UPP candidates won 5 seats:

1997

Donald Halsted challenged Baldwin Spencer for leadership but was not successful.

1998

Bro. Baldwin Spencer left the Antigua Workers Union to establish the Office of The Leader of the Opposition.

1999

2001

Harold Lovell challenged Bro. Baldwin Spencer for the leadership of the Party at the Party’s 5th Biennial Convention, but was unsuccessful.

2004

UPP landslide victory winning 12 seats:

Winston Baldwin Spencer sworn in as Prime Minister

Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro: First female MP in Antigua and Barbuda
March
Trevor Walker of the Barbuda’s People’s Movement (BPM) was sworn in as a member of the Baldwin Spencer-led Cabinet.

2008

The untimely passing of Hon. Charlesworth Samuel

2009

March 12
General elections
UPP retained 9 seats:
March 13
Baldwin Spencer sworn in as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.
During the UPP’s terms in government four (4) women were appointed to the to the Senate.

2014

UPP lost the elections; won Three (3) seats:

Harold Lovell elected as Political Leader at the 10th Biennial Convention.

UPP won one (1) seat:

UPP Secretariat acquired a home which is shared with Progressive 107.3 FM
