UPP Commits To Increasing Youth Participation In Governance At All Levels

The United Progressive Party (UPP) is of the strong view that pursuing greater youth participation at all levels of Government is key to effective national development. Having rolled out one of the youngest political slates in the history of Antigua and Barbuda, the Party will give youth voices a platform.

The UPP is proud to announce that we will immediately move to increase youth representation at all levels of government, targeting at least:

– 25% in the Senate
– 25% across All Boards
– 10% of Board Chairs or Vice Chairs
– 25% on all major committees

The UPP also commits to fostering deeper cooperation with existing youth bodies.

The UPP Government will meet with the National Youth Council at least once per quarter to account for our performance, capture their concerns and give consideration to their recommendations.

The UPP Government will also ensure that the National Youth Parliament is empowered to make a greater contribution to national development. We will give consideration to recommendations and bills presented by the National Youth Parliament.

The UPP Political Leader, Harold Lovell says “The UPP will pursue a policy of affirmative action for youth. All areas of government decision
making will have youth representation.” He further comments, “The theme of this year’s International Youth Day is ‘Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages’. The UPP is proud to deliver concrete plans to ensure that all generations, including the youth, are represented at the decision making table.”

“Young people continue to play a key role in creating sustainable change in our country. Our young people remain a critical link in ensuring that our nation provides opportunities for collaboration among all generations to ensure that any differences in our views are used as a way to unite us and not divide us,” said Hon. Jamale Pringle, the youngest ever Leader of the Opposition in Antigua and Barbuda.
